Bye-Bye Blackheads

While at a friend's house, we had an evening of beauty recipe making.  One that we were both interested in was the Bye-Bye Blackheads Scrub from EcoBeauty by Lauren Cox.  The best part was that the few ingredients required were all common household ingredients.  It is nice and simple to make anytime.

I've moved to a new website! Head on over to Heartful Habits for the Bye Bye Blackheads recipe. Thanks!

  1. I actually put fresh baking soda from the box into my face wash (cetaphil) each day. After years of going to derms, getting facials, etc- this is the only thing that works! all my friends do it as well now!

  2. Can this stuff work on combination/oily skin and regular pimples as well?

  3. trying this now... and now i want to try the baking soda in the (cetaphil) great tips and love this sight!

  4. I think the reason it left your skin red and sore was the sugar in the scrub: sugar crystals are jagged. I would suggest replacing with salt. Salt crystals are more cube-like, and therefore less abrasive.

So usually I will leave sugar scrubs to the tougher areas of skin (legs/feet/etc) and use salt or baking soda for the thinner skin on my face.

    Hope this helps!

  5. what exactly does the baking soda do in the cetaphyl? my daughter has pretty severe acne. she used cetaphyl to wash her face daily. then has differin to apply in the evening and takes monocycline (sp?) 2 times a day. She isn't getting much relief from them yet. so frustrating for her, and myself...as I suffered severe acne and it kills me for her to have to deal with this too.

    1. If your daughter's acne is very server and is not responding well to treatments, it's possible it is caused by a reaction to something she is eating or drinking on a daily basis. Some common culprits food dye, high fructose corn syrup, msg and other food preservatives, chocolate, and wheat.

    2. I've always had severe acne. I've been on acutane and everything else. I'm 35 years old and still have cystic acne as bad as I did in highschool. My son is 8 and already getting pimples, and I'm terrified for him. I just started trying oil cleansing about a week ago, and I'm very impressed with the results. It was scarey to start out- I thought for sure I would break out terribly, but my skin is actually clearing up! It doesn't get shiny-oily during the day anymore, and this is the best it has looked in years! I'm thrilled, and hoping that I have finally found something that will help, and will save my kids from the same trauma. Look it up - it's worth a try! Just do a google search on oil cleansing and you'll find a lot of info. I use 1 part castor oil and 3 parts olive oil.

    3. I have a friend that had severe acne. It wasn't until she was 20 when she learnd she was lactose intolerant and it was causing her acne. She stooped drinking milk and now has beautiful skin.

    4. I started getting acne in 4th grade, it was so terrible. I tried a lot of different things and acutane was the only thing that worked for me. I use cetaphil face wash once a day and the cetaphil moisturizer with it and my face stays pretty clear.

    5. Anti-bacterial hand soap works amazing for acne.

    6. Epiduo.com

Print out the coupon and you can get it for around $15 from your pharmacy. It's AWESOME!

I didn't get acne until my late twenties and have wrestled with it for a while now. Epiduo is the only thing that works for me. It' has benzyl peroxide AND Retin A in it. It's the only cream that does. So far. Which is why the price of it dropped so drastically the past few years. It used to be $35. Then it's progressively dropped year after year.

I think they know that a generic is about to come out. In any case, check out their site.

    7. I tried the oil cleansing treatment. I used it everyday for about 2-3 weeks, my skin looked amazing and so much better. Then all of a sudden, pretty much over night or over a few nights my face was absolutely covered in acne. And I couldn't get rid of it for about 6 months it was so awful and everyone was commenting on how bad my acne was and then pretty much the same way they came they just gradually went away, although waiting it out was a painful process.

    8. Same thing happened to me, only it took more like 9 mos to clear, and I still get larger, clogged pores and pimples in spots I never did before trying the oil method. Worst skincare decision EVER for me. I normally have oily/combo skin. I swear by Vitamin C serum and Benzolyn peroxide wash/ointment. I only use the ointment as needed. I think my diet is really the main trigger for my breakouts these days. I just wish I could get this oily skin under control!

    9. I also have had terrible acne all of my life (I'm now in my mid-40s & have tried EVERYTHING over the years). Over the past two years I have experimented with oil cleansing and researched the heck out of different oils/combos of oils. A couple of things I've learned along the way…do NOT use olive oil or coconut oil as your base (on your face). Both may work for a bit, but eventually end up clogging your pores. Jojoba OR hemp oil (hemp must be refrigerated), mixed with castor oil work to clear up the skin without clogging pores. I use about a dime-size-worth of each oil and one drop of tea tree essential oil (I wash my face twice a day, but only use the tea tree in the evening). After my shower (in which I do not wash my face, but let my pores open in the steam), I rub this mixture over my face and neck. I then lay a VERY warm, wet face cloth over my face until it cools (maybe 30 seconds), and wipe off all of the oil with it. I then lightly oil my CLEAN hands with straight jojoba and gently rub a very thin layer over my face. Jojoba oil (technically a wax of sorts) fakes out my skin into thinking it doesn't need to create sebum, and THANKFULLY has cleared up my acne nearly completely.

  6. There is a product line called re-vitae. It is all natural. Im studying to be an estiticion and i found the line incredible for acne. Pimples with pus coming out are infected. There is an anti microbial was that works wonders for killing the microbes. It also works for athletes feet, diaper rash, really a lot if things! I would recommend using this for acne :) its by helga van dyke. Hope this helps..

  7. As far as the scrub drying out your skin, you could replace the water with almond oil or another gentle oil like this. It would help quite a bit. I can't wait to try this tonight!!!

    2. interesting, I've heard of using olive oil for acne and as a moisturizer.

  8. One thing that I have been using a lot lately is Coconut oil on my skin and with cooking. There are a lot of benefits to coconut oil and maybe it would be a great replacement for the water.

  9. Found this on Pinterest! I just tried this and used coconut oil instead of water (as the previous Anonymous comment suggested). It didn't work out very well, haha. It left my face feeling very very oily and I had to wash it with regular facewash to get rid of the excess oil. On the bright side, my face feel extremely soft now! But, I still have the stubborn blackheads on my chin :(

  10. I use tea tree oil as a spot-treatment during breakouts, it works great. tea tree oil is anti-bacterial so it helps keep the zits from getting infected and it helps dry them up. if I treat the zit the first day it usually disappears by the next day. just dab the oil on, and then I use moisturizer to keep my skin from getting dry as well. the oil smells really bad though...

  11. i had a pimple coming in on my chin, everynight i would (real) honey on the spot, and it helped reduce redeness and honey is an anitbacterical natural substance, good for ones immune system!
honey helps, and to thoroughly dry out the pimple i use honey tooth paste on the spot!

  12. I agree that sugar is too abrasive for the face. Try a tablespoon of baking soda and enough water to make a paste. Nothing else needs to be added.
Exfoliating once does not make blackheads go away. You'll need to do this twice a week and also use some kind of AHA or BHA on a daily basis to get rid of them.
Those that are suffering from acne might try Serious Skin Care Glycolic Cleanser. It's the only thing that keeps my skin clear. Use that twice a day and use a gentle moisturizer like Cetaphil.

  13. What is an AHA or BHA?

    1. alpha hydroxy acid - AHA
      beta hydroxy acid - BHA

  14. i love this idea :) but i have a suggestion sweetie :) don't use just any baking soda because it contains aluminum and you don't want that anywhere near your body. i suggest trying bobs red mill brand baking soda its aluminum free and can be found in most natural food stores, i use it for just about everything :))

    ReplyDelete
  15. baking SODA does not have aluminum in it (any brand) baking POWDER does. ;-) bobs red mill just puts that on there to eliminate confusion of their brand I suppose.

  16. Try baking soda and milk, it exfoliates and the milk calms and moisutizes the skin.

    1. i will try this!

    2. That really does work, the enzymes in milk help clear congested pores--the sugar in the scrub mentioned above is too abrasive, stick with the baking soda:)

  17. I've learned as an esthetician student that baking soda is used with a frequency machine to use as a process called Desincrustation. U can use the water and baking soda alone, but make sure u bring skin bak to balance, Try using vitamine E Oil after the mask.

  18. worked at first than irritated skin? why? need answers

  19. the baking soda changes the ph of the skin, making it more alkaline for extractions. Afterward, the skin requires a solution to adjust the ph back. sugar and salt crystals are. jagged and make microscopic tears in the skin. the skin feels tight and dry due to the lowered ph.

  20. Can you use baking soda and water everyday? I've been doing it every few days followed by olive oil. It seems to be clearing up my skin, but should I be using it more frequently? I haven't seen much reduction in blackheads.

  21. What Really WorKs for oily skin?

What takes away dark spots on Your face ?

All I hear is diffrent stories are they true do house hold, stuff Really work !!

  22. Thanks for sharing!! I found that I put too much water in so dipped a piece of toilet roll in the solution and put that on my nose, as well as the scrub, which I also used all around my face. It hasn't go rid of my blackheads but it has made them appear smaller, and left my face feeling fresh and moisturized.

  23. I have not tried baking soda, but brown sugar, white sugar, olive oil and vanilla essential oil as a facial scrub works great.I have my whole family using it, but my hubby thought the sugar was to course, but he found it worked good after shaving and with in grown hair on his face.

  24. Could i use this method once a day? Not sure if its a little harsh for my skin. Im 14

  25. Use milk instead of water. It soothes, and the lactic acid reacts with the baking soda.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I used baking soda and water and it made my skin feel like it was on fire. Not sure if it was due to pimples on skin, those were the areas most on fire. Next time I'll use milk and baking soda.

  27. One of the best ways to keep skin happy is to have pH balanced skin. The pH level of skin should be between 4.5-5.0 in order for skin to properly do its job (which is protect the body). Apple Cider vinegar has a pH level of 4.25-5.0 making it a great "cleanser". Lemon juice and white vinegar have pH levels around 2.0 making them too harsh for daily use, but can be good used once or twice a month as a "peel." On the other hand, baking soda has a pH level of 9.0 making it too alkaline for skin. It can create issues with the barrier function of skin and should be used moderately. I'd stick with once or twice a month as an exfoliator followed by an Apple Cider vinegar "toner" to return skin to its proper pH level. With all things, discontinue if irritation occurs.

  28. Why 2 tbsp of water? It made it too watery and hard to put on/messy. I will try one if I try this again. Not sure I want to alkalinize my skin so much, but I think the sugar is acidic so hopefully it balances out.

  30. Try adding a few drops of olive oil to the mix for your friends dry skin (baking soda is drying, and when you strip all oils your body actually makes more), And any exfoliate will make your skin red, try rubbing more gently or use brown sugar instead of white, it's finer so it's more gentle

  31. I actually mix some aloe vera gel and olive oil together forming a paste and apply it to my face. I rinse with cool water after twenty minutes. It actually helps my dry skin.
