A Fresher Night's Sleep: Mattress Cleaner

Baking soda has so many uses.  This weekend we tried out a new one to us.  Cleaning the mattress!  I have pretty bad allergies, so I am always somewhat concerned about dust especially in our bedroom (though most of the time not concerned enough to do much about it).  Our mattress is ooold.  It's the mattress I grew up sleeping on and brought along when we got married.  Since in bed is where I spend 8-10 hours a day, I decided it was high time to clean it and found a natural way on Make It Do to do so.

Natural Mattress Cleaner

-1/2 c baking soda

-3-5 drops lavender essential oil

-jar/container

 -sieve/strainer/shaker

Pour baking soda and essential oil into a jar.  Shake to combine.

Sprinkle mixture through a sieve in a light dusting over the entire mattress.

Let sit for at least 1 hour.

Thoroughly vacuum the mattress, ideally using a handheld, hose, or upholstery attachment.

The baking soda draws out dust, moisture, odours, and deep dirtiness and absorbs them.  Then you vacuum it all away.  The lavender is antibacterial and also leaves a wonderfully fresh scent.  This is also perfect for cleaning memory foam.

Brad and I actually went a little crazy and used this mattress cleaner on our mattress, memory foam topper, my memory foam pillow, and his regular pillow.  The recipe above made enough cleaner to cover our double size mattress and the 2 pillows.  Our bedroom smelled so clean and fresh afterwards.  We fell asleep quickly and slept like babies that night.
